Thought Questions Chapter 11: Approaches To Instruction
- Mager and Gronlund support different approaches to writing instructional objectives. How are their approaches similar and how are they different? Which approach do you believe most closely aligns with your beliefs about instructional objectives? Why? Write one objective for your subject area using the approach you identified above.
- In recent years, it seems that lecturing as an instructional approach has received a great deal of criticism. Why do you think this is so? Can you think of any specific examples when lecture might be the most appropriate approach? What can teachers do to make lecturing more enjoyable and beneficial for students?
- Cognitive and social cognitive instructional approaches stress the importance of making things meaningful for students. With these approaches, students must take on some of the responsibility for their own learning. What are some ways that teachers can guide student learning without directing it? As a future teacher, what are your biggest concerns regarding playing a more facilitating and less structured role? Do you think students are capable of guiding their own learning? Why or why not?
- There is much debate over the role of the school in our society. Some believe that the main focus for schools should be learning while others feel an equally important focus should be on children's socialization. What is your opinion about this debate? Do you think teachers should have to worry about students' social and emotional needs as well as their cognitive growth? Why or why not? What can schools and communities do to help teachers in their teaching of social lessons?
- In your own experiences, how effective has cooperative learning been as an instructional approach? What are some reasons that it was successful or unsuccessful? Will you use cooperative learning in your own teaching? Why or why not? If you will use it, how will you use it?
- Give some examples of how each instructional approach mentioned in Chapter 11 can be enhanced by technology. How will you use technology in your own teaching? How will you evaluate the effectiveness of technology in your classroom?
