Reflection Journal Questions Chapter 12: Motivation
- How often do I reinforce my students to help meet class objectives? What type of reinforcement do I use? Am I setting up situations in which students are benefiting from intrinsic reinforcers or are my students relying primarily on reinforcement from me (grades, praise, etc.)? Am I incorporating students' interests into my teaching?
- Am I fostering a high need for achievement among my students? What steps am I taking to address students with a low need for achievement or an external locus of control? Am I making sure that students are aware that what they are learning is meaningful and useful? Am I getting my students involved in their own learning and helping them to work for positive outcomes?
- Am I taking into account the lower needs of my students (physiological, safety, belongingness and love, and esteem)? What am I doing to ensure that my students are in an environment that is conducive to learning and self-actualization? How can I better address this objective?
- Am I making sure that I provide encouragement and provide students with opportunities for success when my they are faced with difficult or complex content/assignments? Am I checking to make sure that student motivation is not negatively affected by low self-efficacy or low self-esteem?
- What impact is my use of technology having on the motivation of my students? Is it having the impact that I had expected? What are some ways that I can add to or adjust my use of technology to increase student motivation?
