Chapter 11: Motivation

  1. Think about your interests. Pick one or two favorite hobbies and describe why they are your favorites. How did you first get involved in these activities? Have you ever agreed to do something in order to please someone (extrinsic reinforcement) and find out you actually enjoyed the activity? How can you use extrinsic reinforcement as a teacher to get students involved in new activities in the classroom? What concerns are associated with relying too heavily on using extrinsic reinforcement?
  2. Do you believe that students have an innate need to succeed academically? Thinking back on your own experiences, would you characterize your need for achievement as high or low? How did your teachers impact your need for achievement? What role can you play in fostering the development of this need in your students?
  3. Write down a few things that you attempted but were unable to complete with success. Now write down a few things that you attempted and completed successfully. To what do you attribute your failure? To what do you attribute your success? How can these attributions be explained by attribution theory? Is the explanation adequate?
  4. Thinking back on your experiences as a student, what are some situations in which your lower needs (according to Maslow's hierarchy of needs) were not met? For example, describe a situation in which you did not feel competent or safe. What impact did this have on your ability to focus on the day's lesson? What steps can teachers take to address the lower needs of their students in order to create an environment most conducive for student learning?
  5. Considering all academic subjects, which subject do you feel is your "worst" subject or the subject in which you feel least competent? How did this subject area become your worst subject area? What are some ways in which a teacher who specializes in this subject area could help you to develop a higher sense of efficacy for this subject? What can you do as a teacher to help a student who feels your area of strength is his/her worst subject?
  6. Brainstorm and describe three to five ideas in which you could incorporate technology as a means of enhancing student motivation. Share these ideas with your peers. Discuss some benefits and limitations of these uses of technology in the classroom.
