Chapter 14: Understanding and Using Standardized Tests
- How am I using standardized testing in my classroom? Is it something I have chosen to utilize or is it a requirement of my school, district, or state? Am I giving the test preparation/administration an appropriate amount of emphasis?
- Are the standardized tests I am using in my classroom norm-referenced or criterion-referenced tests? What are the implications of each type of test for my students?
- Do I understand the meaning of each of the score types reported on my students' standardized test results? If not, do I know where I can get this information? Am I able to explain the scores of my students in lay terms for both the students and their parents?
- How can I use the test results from my students' standardized tests to inform my classroom instruction and curriculum? Should I use test score information to change my instruction and curriculum? Why or why not? How do I feel about being required to use this information for changes?
- What different information can performance tests yield as compared to typical standardized tests? How can I use this information to understand the achievement levels of my students? Do I find this information useful? Why or why not?
- How can I use technology to help prepare my students for standardized tests? How do I feel about the use of technology in test administration and scoring? Do I think computers are able to score short answer or essay questions adequately? Why or why not?
