Chapter 6: Accommodating Student Variability
- What are my beliefs about ability grouping? What do I see as the benefits and costs of ability grouping? If I find myself in a school that utilizes ability grouping, what can I do to ensure that I maintain high expectations for all my students no matter what ability group they fall under?
- As a teacher, what is my role in ensuring the provisions of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act are met? How does this law affect my classroom? What can I do in my classroom to provide further support of this law?
- How well am I, or the teacher I am observing following the IEPs of the students who have them? Am I making the correct accommodations and how are those accommodations working? How am I assessing the progress of these students? Do I have documentation to support my conclusions about my students' progress?
- What are my beliefs about least restrictive environments? Do I feel students with special needs should be taught in inclusive or separate classrooms? In an inclusive classroom, what is my role as a teacher? What specific actions/approaches can I take to ensure that all the students in my classroom are involved and that all of them are making adequate progress?
- Specifically, what am I doing in my classroom to ensure that my students with special needs (students with mental retardation, physical disability, learning disability, emotional disturbance as well as gifted and talented students) are having their needs met? Are these specific approaches successful? Am I providing these students with an appropriate level of challenge? What more could I be doing to help these students?
- What types of technology am I, or the teacher I am observing using to support the learning of students with special needs? Where can I find more information about technology resources for students with special needs? How could I use technology more in my classroom? What challenges does extra technology mean for the classroom or for me as a teacher?
