Chapter 15: Becoming a Better Teacher by Becoming a Reflective Teacher

Activity

Title: Education Reflection

Instructional Strategy: Reflection/Critical Thinking

Purpose:

The purpose of this activity is to get students thinking about the value of reflection.

Objective:
  • Experience the use of reflection.
  • Consider the value of reflection
Student Activity:

Discuss the ways in which reflection can be used. We can reflect on things that have already happened, things that are currently happening and things that are going to happen. Ask students to reflect on three situations with one matching each of the described ways of using reflection. Get students to describe the situation and brainstorm several benefits of taking the time to reflect on them. Ask students to share their situations and benefits.

Variation:
  1. Discuss some situations that are familiar to all students (current events, historical events, shared experiences such as high school graduation). Discuss the value of reflecting on these events. Make connections to education and the benefits that teachers can gain from reflecting on daily events and situations.
