The
Science Center, part of Houghton's Mifflin's Education Place web site, offers many resources for prospective or practicing teachers. You can use this site as a means to extend what you learn by reading
Science Stories, and you can refer to the site in the future as you teach science in your classroom.
The
Science Library Adventures section includes lesson plans and activities for a variety of science subjects. For example, you can explore these connections to topics discussed in
Science Stories:
Note that the lessons in Science Library Adventures are labeled by grade level. This labeling is useful when you are doing a quick search. Remember, though, that your school may address a topic in fourth grade that another school or district is addressing in fifth grade. Since science curriculum always spirals as it proceeds from one grade level to the next, it is possible to revisit topics at varying grade levels. (See Chapter 8 of
Science Stories for a discussion of spiraling curriculum.) For this reason, you shouldn't restrict your instructional materials to those listed for the precise grade level of your students. Also explore the resources for one grade higher and one grade lower.
Another excellent resource at Houghton Mifflin's Science Center is the
DiscoveryWorks section, which provides links to Internet sites for a great diversity of science topics. These links are designed to support Houghton Mifflin's DiscoveryWorks textbook series for elementary school students, a series that encourages project-based learning. Whether or not you use that series in your classroom, the web site offers interesting lessons and a good deal of source material for you and your students.
Within the DiscoveryWorks section, you'll also find
Professional Development resources, including a science fair handbook, research articles, and guidelines for manufacturing your own science materials and equipment.
Finally, be sure to explore the Best of the Net feature and the Project Center, both accessible from the
Science Center home page.
