Chapter 13: Classroom Organization and Management

Organizational Patterns:Realizing that no single classroom organization meets the needs of all students, effective teachers utilize a variety of classroom patterns.

Creating a Supportive Classroom Environment:Literacy development can be significantly affected by the physical environment and social-emotional climate of the classroom.

Role of the Teacher:A competent, effective teacher impacts student learning and assumes a variety of roles in the classroom: facilitator and manager of instruction, decision maker, researcher, and learner.

Parents:Parent involvement in a child’s learning results in more positive attitudes and higher levels of achievement. It is important that the teacher communicate and collaborate with those individuals responsible for the child’s well-being.

Paraprofessionals and Tutors:The classroom is often a place where the teacher works collaboratively with adult paid or volunteer assistants to provide an effective instructional program. Sometimes classmates and older students may act as tutors in the classroom.
