Chapter 3: Education Legacy Reflective Paper "What's Worth Knowing?"

Prepare a 3-4 page paper on your reflections and analysis of what you and past generations of your family were expected to learn in school. As you prepare your reflection, consider the following questions:
  1. What assumptions did your family, your community, and your schools have about "the educated person" and the purpose of education? Did this definition of the educated person apply to all students in the school, or did it vary?
  2. Was "education" in your family confined to formal schooling, or provided in part by other institutions or in other ways?
  3. How did the times and places in which your parents and grandparents lived affect expectations for how much schooling they should have and what they would learn?
  4. What do you think were the beliefs about the nature of knowledge, of learning and teaching (epistemology) held by your own teachers and principals?
  5. How did the content (and quality) of schooling and school curricula change over time and generations; what factors influenced this change?
