Chapter 8: Environmental and Natural Resource Accounting
- Read the 1999 paper "Why Bigger Isn't Better" by Redefining Progress, available on the organization's web site.
Summarize the limitations of GDP discussed in the paper. Briefly summarize how the Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI) is calculated. What have been the trends with the GPI in the United States over the past 50 years? What three main factors explain why many people may feel worse-off despite a growing economy? What policies would promote growth in the GPI?
- Go to the United Nations website on Analytical Tools For Human Development, analytical information from the Human Development Report on various human development indices.
Read the information concerning the Human Development Index (HDI). Summarize how the HDI is calculated. What factors are included? How might the HDI be used to measure inequality within a nation? Do the HDI and GNP always move in the same direction? Why or why not?
