Downloading Boyes/Melvin PowerPoint Files (PC version)
MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
- IBM PC or compatible running 3.1 or later (5.0
or later recommended)
- Microsoft Windows 3.1 or later, Windows 95, or
Windows NT 3.5 or later
- Personal computer using 80386 or higher
processor
- Minimum 4 MB of memory
DOWNLOAD THE POWERPOINT VIEWER TOO...
Even if you do not own PowerPoint software you can still download the
slides by using the Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer for Windows available for downloading here. The PowerPoint Viewer
runs on Windows 3.1 and later, Windows NT 3.5 and later, and on
Windows 95. Note: you will only be able to view slides in a slide
show format using the Viewer. If you have PowerPoint software
installed, refer to your PowerPoint manual for rearranging slides or
adding lecture notes and slides.
STEP ONE: Print these instructions
- Print these instructions first so you can refer to them after
downloading the slides.
STEP TWO: Download PowerPoint slides
- Go to your file manager or Win95 hard drive. Create a
directory (folder) on your hard drive C:\BOYES. Switch back to
your browser.
When the Save dialog box appears, select "Save to Disk." In
the window that appears, look for the directory C:\boyes you
created and double click on that folder. Click "OK." (Windows 95
users: When the Save Downloaded File appears, look for the
directory C:\boyes you created and double click on that folder.
Click Save.")
The file you selected XX.exe will be copied to your
desktop. You will see a "Saving Location" dialog box.
STEP THREE: Uncompress the files and launch PowerPoint
- After the file has been saved to your desktop, leave your
browser and go to your File Manager or Win95HD. Doubleclick on the
NEEDLES folder you created in Step1. Double click on the file you
downloaded XX.exe.
- You will see your screen go blank and files will be inflated
in DOS. At the completion of the inflation, your screen will
automatically switch back to your File Manager. (Windows 95 users:
You will see a black dialogue box and files will be inflated in
DOS. At the completion of the inflation, your screen will read
"Finished" at the top of the dialogue box, at which time you
should close out the box.)
- For Windows 3.1 users, click on another folder outside the
BOYES folder, then click back to the Boyes folder. You should
now see the PowerPoint file (XX.ppt). (This step is not
necessary for Windows 95 users since the .PPT file automatically
appears after uncompression.)
- With PowerPoint software, you can open and view the slides.
Open PowerPoint, then select "File, Open." Locate the chapter file
XX.ppt and double click on it. Refer to your PowerPoint manual
for specific instructions on addiing lecture notes or rearranging
slides.
- If you do not have the PowerPoint software, proceed to install
the Viewer.

STEP TWO: Download the Viewer
- Go to your file manager or Win95 hard drive. Create a

- The Viewer PPTVW.EXE

For Windows 3.1 users, click on another folder outside the
PPTVIEW folder, then click back to the PPTVIEW folder. You should
now see the PowerPoint Viewer files. (This step is not necessary
for Windows 95 users since the files automatically appear after
uncompression.
- Double click VSETUP.EXE to install. A dialog box will
appear and you can choose whether to install the PowerPoint Viewer
and/or Translator. Choose the directory to which you want the
Viewer installed.
- Go to the directory to which you installed the Viewer. Double
click on the file PPTVW.EXE to launch the Viewer. (Windows 95
users: You will see a dialogue box with a PowerPoint Viewer icon
in it. Double click the icon to launch the Viewer.)
- In the Viewer dialog box, search for the file directory to
which you saved your file. You must uncompress the file first. See
previous section on installing the PowerPoint files.
- A click of your mouse will present the next slide. Should you
need a writing/drawing tool, select the pencil on your screen.
Click again to return to the arrow.
- If you need to quit a presenation before reaching the end of
the slide show, hit escape (Esc) key in the upper left of your
keyboard.
