The FTC

The Chapter discusses the market structures known as monopolistic competition and oligopoly. Use the internet to explore some of the behaviors of firms operating in these market structures. Above is the FTC homepage. The Federal Trade Commission is one of the government agencies dealing with the behavior of firms. Explore the homepage to see what competition issues the FTC is dealing with. Then answer the following questions:

Questions
  1. Do any of the issues involve oligopolies?
  2. Is monopolistic competition ever an issue for the FTC?
  3. When the FTC is concerned with market concentration is it dealing more with a monopolistically competitive industry or an oligopoly?
  4. Do you see anything concerning acquisitions or mergers? Why would the FTC be concerned about an acquisition or a merger? Would such an issue arise in a perfectly competitive industry? How about in a monopolistically competitive industry?
