Net Exports Deficit and Surplus


Chapter 10 informs us that net exports are the only component of aggregate expenditures that can be negative (when imports exceed exports). In recent years, the United States is well known to have run with a large net exports deficit. However, has this always been true? Here you will find quarterly data on U.S. net exports. Use the data to answer the following questions:
  1. When was the last quarter where the United States had a net exports surplus (a positive value)?
  2. When was the largest deficit and how big was it?
  3. When was the largest surplus and how big was it?
  4. What was the last quarter listed in the table and what was the value of net exports?
  5. Other things equal, what happens to aggregate expenditures if a country has a bigger net exports deficit?
