Currency Appreciation and Depreciation

In Chapter 7 we learned about exchange rates and how exchange rate changes can affect the prices of goods and services traded internationally. In order to see how the value of the dollar against other major currencies has changed, we can use the web page of Olsen and Associates (O&A), a foreign exchange advisory service in Zurich. Use the O&A "Currency Converter" page to do the following:

  1. Find the most recent German mark value of the U.S. dollar (the most recent day is probably the default day displayed in the date box). List this date and the corresponding exchange rate.
  2. Now go back to the previous Currency Converter page and specify a date one year earlier from the date in part 1. What was the exchange rate a year ago?
  3. Repeat parts 1 and 2 for the Japanese yen value of the dollar.
  4. Based on your findings above, should U.S. goods have become more expensive to German and Japanese buyers over the past year?
