Students should take the Pretests first. The Pretests assess your current skill level. A rejoinder follows each answer to examine whether you've answered correctly or need further practice.

After you have completed the Pretests, use the Practice Tests to enhance your reading skills. The practice tests allow you to identify and develop 10 essential skills. Take advantage of the helpful hints and suggestions that accompany each question to learn effective reading strategies.

Finally, the Mastery Tests allow you to determine if you understand how to apply the tips provided during the Practice Tests. As in the previous sections, you'll have the advantage of rejoinders that evaluate the accuracy of each answer.

    How to Fill Out Quizzes

Each test in ReadingSpace begins with a short reading. Read the material carefully, then answer the series of questions that follow.

To answer multiple choice and true/false questions, simply click on the answer you think is correct. You may change your mind as many times as you like. If you decide to change your answer, just click on the answer you think is correct. Your first selection will be cleared, and your new answer will be selected.

To answer the essay questions, enter your essay in the text box beneath the essay question. To begin writing, place your mouse arrow over the text box and click once. A flashing cursor will now be inside the text box and you can begin typing. Type as if you were working on a word processor or a typewriter. Don't worry about the size of the text box and try to make your lines fit inside of it—it will automatically scroll your writing down to the next line. If you need to go back and look at parts of your answer that are no longer visible in the text box, use the scrollbar on the right-hand side of the text box to move the text into view. The top arrow button scrolls the text up toward the beginning; the bottom arrow scrolls the text down toward the end.

Sending Your Answers to Your Instructor

Once you've finished one of the ReadingSpace tests, you need to send your answers to your instructor. At the bottom of each web page, you'll see a button labeled Submit Quiz. It looks like this:

Press this button when you are finished filling in your answers. You will be forwarded to a new web page that lists the questions and your answers to them. At the bottom of this page are two buttons:

    Press the appropriate button.

    Email to Instructor

If you want to email your answers to your instructor, press the Email to Instructor button. You will be forwarded to a new web page where you will be asked for some information before you can email your quiz.

    Enter Information

You will be asked to enter your name, your instructor's name, and the name of the class or course you are taking into text boxes. You will also be asked to enter your email address and your instructor's email address.

What if I Don't Have an Email Address?

If you don't have an email address of your own, don't worry. Notice the option buttons below the text boxes. They look like this:

Send to both student and instructor. Send only to instructor.

If you don't have an email address of your own, simply select Send only to instructor by clicking on the option button next to it. Only your instructor will receive the completed quiz.

    HTML or Text?

You'll also notice option buttons that allow you to choose between Send as text and Send as HTML. Unless your instructor has specifically asked you to send your quiz as HTML, leave this option Send as text.

    One Last Confirmation

When you've entered all the appropriate information, press the Confirm Email button. You will be forwarded to a confirmation web page that provides a summary of both the email addresses and the quiz. Review the email addresses to make sure they are correct. Use the Back button to return to earlier web pages if you need to make changes.

When you're ready to send the email, return to this confirmation web page and hit the Send Email button.

    How to Get Back Home

You will be forwarded to one more summary web page that looks much like the last web page, except that it announces Email Sent. You'll also notice a hyperlink in the center of the web page: ReadingSpace Home. Click on this to return to the opening page of the ReadingSpace website.
