Paired Essays on Bullying
Exercise 1: Discussion and Critical Thinking

Answer the questions based on the reading, "Disarming the Rage."
  1. Which two of the many forms used in defining terms—example, cause and effect, description, narration, and so on—do these authors use most extensively?

  2. Annotate the essay for the use of cause and effect, example, description, and narration. Note that some of the forms overlap.

  3. Bullying is shown to be the immediate cause of many of the acts of violence discussed by the team of writers. What factors are suggested as two of the causes of the bullying? (See paragraph 7.)

  4. What are some of the feelings of emotional distress that both the bullies and the victims share? (See paragraphs 4, 7, and 9.)

  5. A single definition of bullying is not included. Compose a definition based on the material included in the essay.

  6. To what extent can school intervention curb bulling?

  7. Do you agree with Jackson Katz's view on the cultural causes of bullying: "The concept of power we admire is power over someone else. . . . In corporate culture, in sports culture, in the media, we honor those who win at all costs. The bully is a kind of hero in our society"?
