Case Study 1: Penny has very clear and specific goals that she wishes to reach. She takes the time to write her goals on a piece of paper and plan a reward for herself when she finishes the goals. However, Penny does not know or believe that she will ever really reach the goals. Sometimes the doubt occurs because the goals simply seem too extensive and too unobtainable. Her self-doubt and negative statements about herself so frequently that she becomes frustrated and discouraged. What strategies can Penny use to deal with her self-defeating attitudes and emotions?

Case Study 2: Richard has worked hard all term in all of his courses. Each week he has experienced good grades and success. However, he is now concerned about preparing for four upcoming final exams in two weeks. He feels overwhelmed by all the review and preparation that he needs to do for four different classes. He is afraid he will not have enough time to organize and review all the material. He is seriously thinking about letting two classes "slide" so he can devote all his time to the two most important courses. As his friend, you try to tell Richard that there are ways he can use the next two weeks to set study goals and organize his review tasks effectively for all four classes. What specific techniques are important for you to discuss to coach Richard through the next two weeks?

Case Study 3: Jarod admits that he does not set goals because he really does not know how to organize his ideas into a goal. What are the four-steps for effective goal-setting that could provide Jarod with the necessary techniques to organize his ideas?
