Meet the Authors of College Survival Ross James Quirie Owens A long-time collaborator with Dr. Walter Pauk, and current co-author on the 8th Edition of How to Study in College, Ross Owens earned his B.A. cum laude in English and Film at Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., and did graduate work in film at the University of Iowa and the University of Maryland, where he also taught film history, filmmaking, and public speaking. A former executive managing editor for InfoWorld, a nationwide computer trade newspaper, Ross is an accomplished programmer in both Java and Visual Basic and creator of InfoAuthor, software that categorizes and converts conventional documents into easily searchable Web pages. While at InfoWorld, Ross used his teaching experience to initiate Lunchtime Learning, a series of brown-bag lectures that were designed help keep employees informed and excited about leading edge technologies. Ross's underlying fascination is with the way in which information is acquired, organized, and retained, a theme that bridges his work in computing and education. Since teaming up with Dr. Pauk in 1982, Ross has contributed to a number of his books on reading and study skills, including Six-Way Paragraphs (Jamestown Publishers), Single Skills Series (Jamestown), High School Study Skills (Reston-Stuart), as well as the fourth, fifth and current editions of How to Study in College, all published by Houghton Mifflin. In addition, he has written numerous articles for InfoWorld, primarily on XML, the Extensible Markup Language, an integral element of the next generation of the Internet. When he's not writing, editing, or programming, Ross is an enthusiastic runner and hiker and an avid movie buff, who favors the films of Hitchcock, Kieslowski, and Godard. Write to the author! At College Survival, we know how important feedback is to the process of creating the best book available. Dave Ellis loves to hear from students who have used his textbooks. What worked for you? What didn’t? Do you have a great idea that you think should be included in the next edition of a textbook? E-mail College Survival your comments and we will pass them on to the author. | ||
