One of the best things you can do during your college career is to get to know your school's academic help center. Schools will call it by different names (Learning Center, Achievement Center, Support Center, etc.) but more likely than not, your school will have a great place were you can get help from trained peers, tutors, and instructors—absolutely free! It doesn't get much better than that.
These centers will usually offer a variety of services, including tutoring, workshops, and even one-on-one help in areas such as test-taking skills or reading strategies. Best of all, going to a center doesn't have to be a one-time deal. Many places will let you have ongoing tutorials with someone on staff, giving you time to build a working relationship especially for a longer project.
Academic Centers are especially beneficial if you have learning differences or difficulties, or if English is not your first language. A good center will prepare staff to work with students with special needs, and, in some cases, have staff that specialize in those areas.
Best thing to do is to find out where your center is and start going there early in your college career … maybe even your first week of school! Don't wait to get help the night before your exam or paper is due. The tutors aren't magicians nor are they always at your beck and call. Above all, they will not do the work FOR you. So make an appointment early, get to know the staff that works there, and let them help you become the successful student you can be.
