    Use Muscle Reading

To get a feel for Muscle Reading, apply this tool on a textbook you are currently using on one of your other classes. Go through each step described below, using the recommended times as guidelines. (Plan on about one hour total, but be flexible.) This is just for practice, so experiment and have fun.

Step 1: Preview (5 minutes)
Look at the first page of the chapter. Read the quotes and scan through the list of articles in this chapter. Then flip through the rest of the chapter. Look at headings (printed in bold type) and pictures.

Step 2: Outline (5 minutes)
Create a simple outline by making a list of major headings in this chapter. (Just list titles of articles-not Journal Entries or exercises.) For example, the three major headings that follow this article are:
  • Read with a dictionary in your lap
  • Reading fast
  • When reading is tough
Step 3: Question (5 minutes)
Turn each heading you wrote down into a question. Don't worry about writing the perfect question. There are several possibilities for each heading, so just experiment. For example:
  • What are the benefits of reading with a dictionary in my lap?
  • What are some strategies for reading faster?
  • What are some tools to use when reading is tough?
Steps 4 to 6: Read, Underline, and Answer (about 30 minutes)
Now read the rest of this chapter. As you read, look for answers to your questions. Then go back and underline the sentences that most directly answer the questions. Be selective about how much you underline.

Step 7: Recite (10 minutes)
Look back at your list of questions from step 3. Speaking out loud, answer as many questions as you can from memory.

Steps 8 and 9: Review and Review again (5 minutes)
Scan the passages you underlined and then answer your list of questions again. Repeat this step within 24 hours.
