Introduction:As noted in the chapter, many businesses today use incentives to encourage and reward higher levels of performance. This exercise will give you more understanding of how incentives work.
Internet Assignment:Assume that you are a human resource manager with a moderate-sized service organization The firm has just been taken over by a major corporation, and you have received notification that you will be responsible for moving from the firm's current compensation model, which rewards people on the basis of seniority, to an incentive system tying rewards to performance. Search the Internet for resources that might assist you in planning and managing this change.
Follow-up:Describe the kinds of information you were able to locate and characterize its likely value to you. Finally, respond to the following questions:
- What additional information would you need, besides what was available on the Internet, to actually make the plan as described here?
- Regardless of the type and value of information you were able to locate, do you think more information will be available on the Internet in the future?
- The exercise indicates that you work for a service company. Would the processes and outcome have been different if you worked for a manufacturer instead? Why or why not?
