Introduction: The Internet is increasingly being used by individuals who are looking for a job. Start by imagining three different kinds of jobs that you might have an interest in (e.g., nurse, accountant, artist, pilot). Try to make the jobs as relevant as possible to your own true interests and aspirations.
Internet Assignment: Use the Internet to search for job or career opportunities in each of the three areas you identified. Select the one job in each set that provides the most information prospective employees might find useful.
Follow-up: How easy or difficult was this task? Did it make you more or less interested in using the Internet to look for a job? Finally, respond to the following questions:
- Would it be possible to use the job characteristics model as a framework for comparing and contrasting jobs? That is, can you make informed assessments as to the extent to which the jobs you found have higher or lower levels of variety, autonomy, and the other characteristics?
- Can you assess the degree to which you would have opportunities to participate in various ways in the jobs you found?
- Can you determine the extent to which the jobs provide flexibility with respect to alternative work arrangements?
