Chapter 4 Foundations of Individual Behavior

Introduction: Many organizations today, especially larger ones, conduct regular or periodic surveys intended to measure the job satisfaction and/or overall morale of their employees. Increasingly, more and more smaller to medium-size companies are also starting to do this. This exercise will help you see what role the Internet might be able to play in conducting such surveys.

Internet Assignment: Assume that you are the human resource manager of a medium-size but rapidly growing company. Your boss, the CEO, has just pointed out to you that turnover and complaints among the firm's employees appear to be increasing. He further suggested that he thinks that declining morale might be at least part of the problem. He has instructed you to develop and administer an attitude survey to see if this is indeed the case. To carry out this assignment, first conduct an Internet search to see what you can learn about attitude surveys. Focus specifically on the availability of Internet-based surveys that are available for sale and consulting businesses that offer to provide attitude surveys for a fee.

Follow-up: Select the five most promising sites that you can identify and then describe the strengths and weaknesses of each. Finally, respond to the following instructions and/or questions:
  1. What benefits can the Internet provide to managers interested in surveying their employees' attitudes?

  2. What risks or concerns might you suggest to a manager interested in using the Internet to help determine how to measure attitudes?

  3. Would you buy an Internet attitude measurement service or product based on its web site alone? Why or why not?
