Introduction: The Internet is useful for many different types of activities in addition to emailing your friends. For managers it is perhaps most useful as a source of information. One way to use the Internet is to find out what information is available on a certain topic. For example, a manager could use the Internet to find out what other companies are doing related to workforce diversity. This exercise will let you practice finding and using some of that information.
Internet Assignment: This chapter described several ways that companies can become more multicultural, as well as different types of programs to increase the diversity of the workforce. Assume that the president of the company has charged you with the responsibility for finding out what other companies are doing to increase the hiring of qualified minorities and women. What types of programs are other companies finding successful? Search the Internet to look for answers to these questions.
Follow-up: Evaluate which sites provided the most useful information and answer the following questions:
- Which sites did you find to have the most information? Did you use a library search engine to look for articles on the topic? Which ones were most useful? Why?
- To what extent do you feel that you could rely on the information from these sties to make critical decisions regarding workforce diversity?
- Were any of the sites you found obviously biased toward one way of thinking or toward a particular group?
