dual-structure theory Identifies motivation factors, which affect satisfaction, and hygiene factors, which affect dissatisfaction.
ERG theory Describes existence, relatedness, and growth needs.
hierarchy of needs theory Maslow's hierarchy that assumes human needs are arranged in a hierarchy of importance.
human relations approach Suggested that favorable employee attitudes result in motivation to work hard.
hygiene factors These factors are extrinsic to the work itself. They include factors such as pay and job security.
motivation The set of forces that lead people to behave in particular ways.
motivation factors These factors are intrinsic to the work itself. They include factors such as achievement and recognition.
motive A factor that determines a person's choice of one course of behavior from among several possibilities.
need Anything an individual requires or wants.
need for achievement The desire to accomplish a task or goal more effectively than in the past.
need for affiliation The need for human companionship.
need for power The desire to control the resources in one's environment.
need theories of motivation These theories assume that need deficiencies cause behavior.
primary needs The basic physical requirements necessary to sustain life.
scientific management One of the first approaches to management. It focused on the efficiency of individual workers and assumed that employees are motivated by money.
secondary needs The requirements learned from the environment and culture in which the person lives.
