Exploring the Web
Chapter 13: Implementing Strategy in Companies That Compete Across Industries and Countries

Go to http://www.sears.com/and locate information for investors. Study the pattern in the history of Sears's diversification strategy in the 1980s, and look at its press releases. What have been the changes in its multibusiness model over time? How would you characterize its strategy today? What effects on its performance would you expect its recent strategic moves to have? Based on this analysis, how do you think Sears's structure, control systems, and culture have changed over time?

General Task:
Search the Web for a multibusiness company that is in the process of modifying or changing the way it implements its strategy. What changes is it making to its structure or control systems? Does IT have a role in the changes? What structure is it moving toward? Why is this structure more appropriate than the old one?
