Chapter 20: Basic Elements of Control

  1. Since financial controls are crucial to all organizations numerous sources dealing with financial information may be useful. Important information about the securities and commodities markets may be found at the New York Stock Exchange [http://www.nyse.com/], the American Stock Exchange [http://www.amex.com/], and the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotation System (NASDAQ) [http://www.nasdaq.com/]. Another interesting site is the Chicago Board of Trade [http://www.cbot.com/], which deals with commodities and futures. Or click on the "Global Markets" button on the NASDAQ site and find links to many international securities exchanges, including those of Japan, the UK, and fifteen other countries.

  2. The Securities and Exchange Commission [http://www.sec.gov/] offers free information on U.S. securities, including Edgar filings. Edgar documents include corporate 10-K statements, which disclose income, balance sheet, and cash flow information for all publicly-traded U.S. firms. The SEC Web site also provides information about insider trading and securities fraud cases, as well as educational material about basic financial concepts.

  3. The Better Business Bureau Online [http://www.bbbonline.org/] offers consumer education, customer complaint, and conflict resolution services.
