Exploring the Internet
Chapter 19: Managing Work Groups and Teams

Teamwork continues to be important in corporate settings, but it is also employed in a wide variety of non-business organizations. View the Web sites of the Navy Seals [http://www.navyseals.com/] and the Emerson String Quartet [http://www.emersonquartet.com/], and then answer the following questions:
  1. What evidence of the use of teams can be found at each organization's Web site?

  2. What evidence of conflict can be found at each organization's Web site? What methods do you think are employed by these organizations as they manage conflict?

Internet Exercise
The opening incident of Chapter 19 describes the teamwork of a high-performing team at Pfizer, which is working effectively to develop new pharmaceuticals. Another highly effective team is formed at management consulting firm McKinsey & Company [http://www.mckinsey.com/]. View the firm's Web site, and then answer the following questions:
  1. Based on the information you found on their Web site, give some examples of ways that McKinsey uses teamwork. Include teamwork within a consulting team, as well as between consultants and clients.

  2. What advantages does McKinsey get from the use of teamwork? What are some potential disadvantages for the consulting firm?

  3. Some managers believe that hiring outside consultants like McKinsey is, to some extent, an abandonment of teamwork, because it takes control away from company personnel. If you were a manager, would you agree with this view? Explain. What actions can a manager take to motivate his or her workers to engage in teamwork with outsiders?
