Exploring the Internet
Chapter 15: Basic Elements of Individual Behavior in Organizations

Access the Web sites of Au Bon Pain Bakery [http://www.aubonpain.com/] and Continental Airlines [http://www.continental.com/]. Then answer the following questions:
  1. What elements of individual behavior in organizations can you identify at these Web sites?

  2. What evidence can you find that these organizations strive to enhance creativity among their workforces?

Internet Exercise
ExxonMobil has recently updated its Web-based recruiting material. Access the "Careers" page at the Web site of ExxonMobil [http://www.prod.exxonmobil.com/]. Then answer the following questions:
  1. Based on what you found at ExxonMobil's Web site, what work-related attitudes and behaviors is the firm looking for in its employees?

  2. What actions is ExxonMobil taking as it attempts to attract personnel with the desired work-related attitudes and behaviors?

  3. ExxonMobil was created by the merger of Exxon and Mobil. Following the merger, the new firm took away the "domestic partner" rights that had been extended to Mobil employees. These rights primarily benefited workers in long-term, same-sex relationships. What do you think will be the effect of this change on workers and the company? Consider both attitudes and behavior in your answer.

Examine the Web sites, especially the "Careers" pages, of other firms competing in the oil and gas industry, such as Texaco [http://www.texaco.com/] (a subsidiary of ChevronTexaco) or Phillips Petroleum [http://www.phillips66.com/brands/marketing.htm] (a subsidiary of ConocoPhillips). Do these firms seem to be looking for the same work-related attitudes and behaviors?
