Access the Web sites of two Japanese automotive firms: Toyota [http://www.toyota.com/] and Honda [http://www.hondacorporate.com/] (On the Toyota site, the "Operations" and "News" pages will be helpful. For Honda, the "Press," "History" and "Worldwide" pages will be helpful.) Then answer the following questions:
  1. Does the behavioral or bureaucratic model seem to more accurately fit the design of each firm?

  2. Which basic form of organization design does each firm use?

The Chapter 12 closing case describes Yum! Brands' innovative response to competitive pressure in the fast food industry. Go to the Yum! Brands Web site [http://www.yum.com/] and look at its home page. Examine all of the firm's activities and operations but focus in particular on its organization design. Then answer the following questions:
  1. Based on the information at Yum!'s Web site, how would you describe its organizational design?

  2. Find out as much as you can about situational influences on Yum!-its core technology, environment, size, and stage of the organizational life cycle. Is Yum!'s organization design appropriate for its situational influences? Why or why not?

  3. Find out as much as you can about Yum!'s corporate-level strategy. Is its organization design appropriate for its corporate-level strategy? Why or why not?

One of Yum!'s competitors in the burger segment of the fast food industry is Wendy's. Examine the Web site of Wendy's [http://www.wendys-invest.com/] and compare its organization design with that of Yum! What similarities and differences can you find? Given that the two rivals are very similar in products and markets served, why do you think differences exist?
