Chapter 20 Basic Elements of Control
- Financial controls are crucial to all organizations, and so numerous sources dealing with financial information may be useful. One important source of information is the securities and commodities markets, such as the New York Stock Exchange, the American Stock Exchange , and the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotation System - NASDAQ. Other interesting sites include the Chicago Board of Trade that deals with commodities and futures, and the "Global Markets" button on the NASDAQ site which links to many international securities exchanges, including China, Japan, the U.K., and 20 other countries.
- The Securities and Exchange Commission offers free information on U.S. securities, including Edgar filings. Edgar documents include corporate 10-K statements, which disclose income, balance sheet, and cash flow information for all publicly-traded U.S. firms. The SEC web site also provides information about insider trading and securities fraud cases, as well as educational material about basic financial concepts.
- The Better Business Bureau Online offers consumer education, and customer complaint and conflict resolution services.
