Chapter 7 Basic Elements of Planning and Decision Making

  1. See how the U.S. Army defines the strategic, tactical, and operational levels of decision making in their Field Manual 3.0, entitled Operations: "The Levels of War."

  2. Examples of organizational mission statements can be readily found on the Internet. The Disney mission is a traditional mission statement. The Johnson and Johnson mission statement is one of the first corporate missions, and still recognized as an exemplary statement. The Ben and Jerry's mission is a great example of a newer mission, with a focus on philanthropy and community service.

  3. George Odiorne, a former professor of management at the University of Massachusetts, was the first to use the phrase, "Management by Objectives." See the web site, "An Interview with George Odiorne" for his views, both positive and negative, on the current use of MBO in organizations.
