Chapter 5: Merchandising Operations

Inventory

Instructions: Use one of the following web search engines to search for merchandising businesses. Choose one and prepare a short report that identifies the name of the business, the product(s) it sells, and the type of inventory system it uses. Discuss whether you think the company would use a periodic or perpetual inventory system, and why. Include in the report the company’s sales, cost of goods sold, and gross margin figures. A linked web site is included below as an example.

Web Search Engines:
1. Yahoo!
2. Excite
3. Lycos
4. Go.com
5. AltaVista

Sample Site:
Target Corporation

Extended Research Activity

Using the web search engines above, find a merchandising company that offers its own line of credit (proprietary credit) and answer the following questions:
  • How much of the company’s total sales revenue is from credit operations?
  • Does the company’s credit operations report revenues from merchant fees? If so, what is the amount?
  • What are merchant fees and why would a company with a proprietary line of credit charge these fees?

Either print out your answers for submission or email them to your instructor.
