Sample Article: "Industry's Weakness Blamed on Management Practices" (Financial Times—June 8, 2001)
British manufacturing's dismal performance in recent years can be explained largely by the failure of companies to adopt tried-and-tested management methods implemented by global rivals, according to a study by the McKinsey consultancy. The consultancy says that the weakness of many UK-based manufacturers is not related to low investment or the quality of the workforce, and could be overcome by a big effort to introduce techniques such as "lean manufacturing" and performance management.
